Summary

 Responsible for assisting with oversight of all Accounting Department activities, including general accounting, accounts payable, investment accounting, and financial statement preparation. Assists with proper recording of the assets, liabilities, income and expenses. Responsible for the preparation of all financial reporting. Assists with oversight of the administration of software systems including Workpaper Manager, securities accounting, and mortgage loan systems. Assists with monitoring, assessing, and applying accounting changes under U.S. GAAP, Statutory Accounting and IFRS Accounting for Canadian insurance operations. Key interface with the external accounting firm for year-end audits and tax return preparation for all entities.

 

Manager notes:

Manager is looking for someone who has a CPA, life insurance background/experience, worked for an Insurance Company and who has managing, supervisory and statutory experience. ERP, Oracle, SAP experience is a plus.  CPA REQUIRED.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Oversees the activities of the department including directing, advising, reviewing and managing direct and indirect reports; makes recommendations on hiring, performance appraisals and related employment issues.
  2. Responsible for preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports for senior management. Prepares specialized accounting reviews for senior management. Provides recommendations for strategic changes to financial/accounting operations, challenges current operations to find better approaches and enhances programs and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
  3. Responsible for the preparation of quarterly and annual statement filings as well as quarterly reporting for the affiliated entities; assist with preparation of tax returns for all entities.
  4. Assists with monitoring, assessing, and applying accounting changes under U.S. GAAP, Statutory accounting and IFRS accounting.
  5. Trains or provides appropriate training for employees; coaches, provides feedback, counsels and motivates employees.
  6. Oversees the process of preparing for and assisting the internal and external auditors, including preparation of the quarterly Model Audit Rule (MAR) testing required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  6. Experience dealing with regulatory agencies.

Systems and Technical Knowledge

  1. Workpaper Manager and Policy Administration Systems is a plus.
  2. General Ledger and Accounting Systems.
  3. Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

 Education:  BS in Accounting.

 Experience:  At least 8 years of experience in the insurance industry and/or public accounting with supervisory/management experience. Insurance accounting background is preferred.

 Licensing / Certification:  CPA is required.

Location:  CT. During the first few weeks of training this person will need to be onsite to train with different people in the department. After training, there will be some hybrid of a work schedule, for instance, 2 days onsite, 3 from home or 3 days onsite, 2 days from home. Will be required to be onsite 100%, M-F once the offices reopen.

Work Schedule: M-F, 8 am – 5 pm

Salary Range:  $160K-$180K/year. Some flexibility if candidate has right skills set and experience. There is a bonus potential for this role. Currently bonus is between 6-12% based on experience
